I installed ssh-server to get to the bottom of this. When the computer froze, I ssh'ed into it. Surprise! It worked. It turns out that this is not a kernel freeze. Mouse moves but Caps lock does not respond. In the ssh session, I went into top and htop. Nothing suspicious at all, in fact, there's
