on my dell xps m1530 i have a digital microphone sensitivity control but
even if i turn it all the way up the signal still is very faint. every
time i open gnome-volume-control i see the same red cross effect Srix
described.

same thing happening here, only difference is i'm running ubuntu jaunty.
the message started appearing after installing the linux-backports-modules.
without the linux-backports-modules i get the "MAC is in deep sleep!" message

Numerous wlan error messages in dmesg log after latest network-mana
same thing happening here.
but i think it's not just related to the shutdown process. since i can
already see some network-manager related error messages if i change to
F1 right after entering my password at the gdm screen. but other than
that network-manager works great.

I only get some output talking about network-manager if I switch to the
virtual terminal right after gdm logon. here's a picture of what i am
talking about (at least the part i was able to take a picture of)
