I got the Edimax adapter replaced with another kind so I could not test
it with the newer kernel. Current is a Gigabyte which works flawlessly
with 2.6.28-13. Thanks for your time!

Yes I tried booting up with the device plugged in, it also halted
ubuntu. The screen showed the background of the top bar, the bottom bar
and the middle area. All filled up with solid color.

During installation from the alternate CD the drive was still seeking very
badly at some times (for about 10 minutes, during the other 20 minutes seeking
was minimal/normal). At the "preparing packages for installation" part the bad
times were when there were a two long seeks for every package.
did it, after x started I pressed ctrl+alt+1 to watch the boot log:
running local boot scripts
[ubuntu startup sound starts, then cuts in the middle]
[few seconds passes]

Anyway, now I have installed 7.04, and hot-plugging does not hal
