For me shutdown don't works. PC stopped a few seconds then restart. Solutions :
press the powerbutton or press 'c' in the grub menu (grub-pc) and command
'halt'.

sorry for my late answer.
The desktop with this issue is now in my father's home. This issue is still
remaining. I will do some tests but only in a few weeks. I'll post the results.

i install ubuntu 10.04.1 64 bits, dual boot with W7.

So, during shutdown, I'm not able to switch in tty's. In fact, tty1 appears on
screen but shutdown is going on... and then it boot again like everytime !

i have added 'blacklist vga16fb' manually (sudo gedit...don't be sorry for your
'bad' command !) in blacklist-framebuffer.conf.
result of "lsmod |grep fb" don't list vga16fb yet (after reboot of course).
BUT shutdown is still hanging (testing twice) ! Bad luck for me !

yes, my /home is on a separate partition, which is a logical partition. (dual
boot with windowsxp --> 4 primary partitions at most).
What are "dotfiles" ?. However, i have already moved all my personnal files on
my other computer (and on an external DD too !). So there is no danger...
