Problem started about three days ago when installing updates, ever since
no matter what I try (aptitude, synaptic etc.) dpkg will fail with one
or more (usually more) 'no space left on device' errors. At first it
told me to run 'dpkg --configure -a'

It has gone away for me too, I think it has gone away, before it seemed that
any action using dpkg would trigger it.

Running jaunty, amd64 on ext4
When I decided to install todays updates (using update-manager) it got most of
the way through then failed, it said there was no free space in
/var/[forgot]/dpkg or something similar (sorry i didn't write down the exact
output)

properly, so when grub tried to boot into it it failed.
