I also have the issue of excessive static with Intel ICH8 Family HD
Audio Controller and Ubuntu Hardy.

As requested. I hope these help. (Note: after finishing the upgrade to
8.04 through Synaptic, I went into the terminal and used "sudo apt-get
upgrade" which upgraded to the 8.04 gcl successfully.)
