I have a z60m and am currently experiencing the same problem. This was
not an issue in Hardy but since upgrading to Intrepid bluetooth is now
always switched on upon reboot. It doesn't matter if I have switched
bluetooth off with FN+F5 prior to a reboot either.

bluetooth always enabled since
I've tried the lucid alpha-2 live cd on the thinkpad z60m, but could not
reliably boot to the desktop with it. When I did get to the desktop,
the bluetooth was initially on and could be toggled on/off with FN+F5.
Attempts to shutdown/reboot did not complete successfully and resulted
in locking up
I have just completed a fresh install of Karmic on my Thinkpad z60m.
The original issue still persists. Toggling bluetooth on/off with FN+F5
still works. Switching off bluetooth with FN+F5 and rebooting results
in bluetooth being re-activated again.

I just noticed bug #959561 and was curious, so I installed xfce4-mixer
and followed the steps to configure the mixer to use the active sound
card.
For me, this has solved the volume up and volume down media/function
keys. However, the mute key only partially works. It works to mute the
volume, b
I also have this problem on my Thinkpad Edge 15 after a fresh install of
Xubuntu 12.04. The sound works. The settings in Volume Control work.
The media/function keys for update the OSD notification, but do not
update the settings in Volume Control, nor do they actually affect the
volume of sound
I upgraded Xubuntu from 12.04 LTS to 14.04 LTS and I removed
xscreensaver based on the post-upgrade recommendation.
However, what I found was that the screen blanked while parole was
playing a video. Here is what is happening:

Hey guys,
A 60 day expiry on this bug is not fair! I couldn't repro the bug for
atleast a year after it first bit me, and I use my laptop 70% of each
day.
Please remove the expiry - thanks.

I have this issue as well on Thinkpad Edge 15 running Xubuntu 12.04.1

Plugged battery back in and currently running on battery. Function keys
remain functioning. Wow! What an obscure work-around to this problem.
This issue has been driving me nuts for the last month! Thanks
Norbert :)
