Exact same problem on Lenovo T60 with ipw3945. Feisty with
2.6.20-15-generic. Network Manager uninstalled and interfaces file
manually edited. Logs, etc. provided on request. sudo ifdown eth1 &&
ifup eth1 starts wireless easily.
