Same here on Bio-Linux 8 (Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS) AMD64.
To get networking back, you'll have to downgrade two packages. Find
another machine, download these debs from launchpad. Copy to affected
machine, and install:

Bibus in the 12.04.1 repos is old and doesn't work. Downloading the
latest debs from sourceforge and upgrading solves all issues. Please
consider including the 1.5.2.2 version in the 12.04 repos.

I believe this is related to BUG 1024591, and has a lot to with not
neeing able to indepedently name each virtual workspace. Apparently
this has been enabled upstream.

I can confirm same bug nVIDIA proprietary drivers, think it was caused
by last xorg common and xorg server updates. However, upgrading to GIMP
2.8 (http://www.noobslab.com/2012/04/install-gimp-28-on-
ubuntu-1204-precise.html) eliminates problem.

This bug has been reported many times on Ask Ubuntu, but I think I've
figured it out (see attachment)
In order to use Gnome Classic and Compiz, one has to use the General
Settings>Desktop Size
Then choose Horizontal Virtual Size as 4
Vertical Virtual Size 1
Number of Desktops 1
This results in
