The deb package referenced is almost 2 years old, is there a newer deb
package with SSL support? Something for Hardy?

Same issue here, Firefox fonts appear very large on certain sites and
sometimes only on certain sections of a site, while others appear
normal. Changing about:config setting layout.css.dpi to 96 appears to
correct the problem.

I can confirm, this happens to me as well. I forgot I even clicked the
login window icon and it appeared minutes later. After that it seems
fine, I don't know if it's the first time you ever open it or the first
time per session.
