I am now using a Lenovo T61p laptop (which suffered from similar
problems using versions 8.04 and earlier), but the symptom no longer
occurs in 8.10.

I have the same problem of seeing networks but not being able to connect
to them in Kubuntu 8.04. I also installed Ubuntu 8.04, thinking it
might be a problem with Knetworkmanager, but there was no difference. I
am using a Lenovo T61p with an Intel 3945 wireless card.

Normally, in Kubuntu, after pressing one of the laptop's volume-control
keys (volume-up, volume-down, or mute), a gray box appears on the screen
listing the current level of the volume. The volume level is also
automatically adjusted in kmix to match.
