Just to let everyone know, I had this problem as well on my LG LW70
laptop with Hardy installed. The problem was intermittent, and affected
gedit as well - the whole system would freeze and had to be hard
rebooted. It mostly happened when I held down the backspace key, or

the user i tested comes through ldap and his home is mounted via nfs
when starting kopete for the first time from a gnome session is crashes when
opening the settings dialog

install libgl1-mesa-dri
xvfb gets itself into a fuss that it can't find the dri extension and
will just CPU spin until killed off. Installing libgl1-mesa-dri will fix
this particular issue... xvfb should probably be made dependent on dri
or the default config changed.
