I have exactly the same problem. I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 8.04 to
8.10 and now installed Wine. Everything to do with Wine, from running
its configuration program to using it to launch Windows applications

What distribution do you use (8.10?) and is the sound away since an upgrade?
If that is the case you should be able to get your sound back doing a
"alsamixer -Dhw" in the Terminal and setting PCM to 100 or so. Then it's a
duplicate of bug 288039.

I updated from Hardy to Intrepid and before that I had not system-
cleaner nor usb-creator. After the upgrade I had both, both without
icons and both untranslated and in the wrong sections of the application
menu. IMO this software was/is not ready for a ubuntu release yet.

Using gnome-volume-control, the sound for capture must be put close to
max to hear the sound properly.
Also, like another said Selecting Pulse Audio Server solves the problem.

restart
install flash_pluginnonfree

Hello, I have the same problem, the shutdown/restart problem could be solved,
but I still cannot hear any sounds, nor can I change any network settings (not
authorized or something like this). Any help? My System configuration is

Hello, after two months running 8.04 without any issues, this morning I
installed 8.10 through command line.
Firefow always crushed when opening any page containing SWF.
Currently I'm using Adobe flash player for Mozilla.
Also i have experienced other issue with KArchiver, it configures
itselfs
