I was able to fix this as well.
# Completely remove nvidia-glx-new
# Remove nvidia-kernel-common (this also removes linux-restricted-
modules), (I am not sure if step 2 is required)
# install build-essentials
# Download the Nvidia beta driver that came out on April 10. You can get
it here

That driver should work for an 8400.

I'm guessing that when the new driver is no longer beta, the restricted
driver manager will be able to pick it up

I've also noticed tracker drastically slowing down certain windows. I
uninstalled it and firefox stopped graying out on me
