I only enabled the firewall, as I said, by clicking the button Enabled.
I used the GUI only. I didn't do anything else, so I am assuming what
happened was because of the defaults. This is Mint 8 Helena Main
edition, so it is gufw 9.10.4. Hope that helps.

After a failed update attempt late last night, the graphics were once
again working properly. The keyboard/mouse then quit working so I
couldn't investigate further (couldnt get to virtual terminal).

It's driver specific. I am still getting a jumbled screen even when
booting to command line (no X.Org running). I'm taking a guess that
when my update crashed out that X.Org reverted back to a default driver
and that is why I had a "fixed" screen until I reconfigured packages.

While trying a few things out, I noticed that I cannot ssh anywhere
after enabling the firewall (using either gufw or "ufw enable" from the
cmdline). The outgoing ssh connection just sits there forever; according
to ssh in verbose mode, it is stuck in the connecting stage. There are
no log messages
Also I just noticed that any already opened webpage that attempts to do
a refresh at any time after the firewall is enabled gets stuck reloading
forever, and there are no log messages of any blocked packets on port
80. The page reloads fine on its next refresh if I disable the firewall.

After upgrading from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04, all the upgrades happened
except for libshogun-dev. It was not upgraded from version
0.10.0-2.1ubuntu1 to 1.1.0-4ubuntu2.
Both Ubuntu Software Center and Synaptic are unable to upgrade this
package automatically.

But how does lam relate to the upgrade wanting to remove octave-msh?
octave-msh is a very useful package and would prefer to keep it. Is
there any reason why it can't be left installed?

Also, typing for the first time after loading a long webpage
scrolls to the bottom, instead of just one line down, i.e. is
behaving like . After using it once, starts working
normally on that webpage. But if you open another new webpage, the bug
happens all over again.

A common usecase for firefox in Unity is holding down the mouse button
and dragging across the firefox top menu items - File, Edit, View,
History, Bookmarks, Tools, Help. If you accidentally touch Bookmarks
while dragging across the other menu items, the whole Unity interface
This is happening in Ubuntu Precise 12.04 using firefox 17.0.1, with no
addons, in safe mode.
