system/administration/printers drops down the printer panel [windo]
right mouse on HP lazer jet 5, select properties
click on test page

test page only transmitted to printer in A4 not letter settings
printer requires A4 tray [& paper] not available.
prints from word processor in letter size
only test page seems not to follow settings and stays at default

tried it once more and while the pop-up reporte a letter test page was
sent, the printer receives an a4 test page.

win 2K beta drivers on XP, no linux driver
this is NOT a rush as everything else from open office prints fine.
the test page from printer properties may be in a fixed size.
