this is with 32bit karmic
so the system testing seems pretty buggy overall, but particularly the
internal mic test was invalid. I found under sound settings that the mic
was muted by

tried multiple times to erase disk and install, but fails each time near
the end of the process. tried going back to a 19.10 and that failed too,
so suspect the HDD is messed up somehow at this point, but not clear how
so.

for some reason that worked while:

not sure that this particular bug is related to sound issue with HDMI on
ID11.
as far as sound goes I can't get it to work either. From terminal
alsamixer setting won't let me adjust S/PDIF levels
