Not sure how relevant this might be to most of you but I also had the same problem. Installing the nvidia-glx-new driver or nvidia-glx driver and restarting crashed xorg and I had to either type "sudo dpkg- reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" in a virtual terminal or use bulletproof X to reconfigure t
