You can try latest Debian package which should fix the issue with mc not
being able to save the configuration, but the sensible-editor patch is
still in place as per Debian policy (nothing prevents you, however, from
choosing mcedit in update-alternatives). Sorry.

Thanks for the patch, I have included it in the Debian package. You are
right, we at Fedora are doing it in the same way. Please notify upstream
(Debian) if you want to have your problems resolved in the future.

I had the same effect on
//xxx/yyy on /media/calculon type cifs
(rw,mand,noexec,nosuid,nodev,user=zyv)
mc shows the directory size of 9 mb, but du -ch shows 231 mb. If I copy
this folder to the local file system, the size matches. I think it's a
du's problem, not mc. Try to compare with Nautilus
So what? We can not reproduce it.
By the way, my mc configuration is different:
z...@mypride:~/Desktop$ grep -i ftp ~/.mc/ini
ftpfs_directory_timeout=900
ftpfs_retry_seconds=30
ftpfs_always_use_proxy=0
