Install of Hardy/8.04 failed for me several times.
The failure was always upon trying to make ext3 filesystem.
Before details, let me summarize some points of my case.

I am confused what is the 'right' way to configure the keyboard
to support both 'us' and 'il(lyx)' layouts.
In my good-old /etc/X11/xorg,conf I had:

solved the problem.

I suspect the internal spawned 'gnuchessx' is working as hard as it can,
even when it is not its turn. Probably guessing opponent next move
and computing future potential response.

In the same box, when I am trying installing Xubuntu 9.04 desktop,
There are other installation problems (due to lack of RAM? 112MB).
But the CD is well driven and /var/log/{kern.l
The same problem happened to me with xubuntu-9.04-alternate-i386.
Apparently pata_opti kernel module(s) is(are) missing.
My suggestion to Ubuntu developpers is to add pata_opti module(s) to
the alternate variant.
Until then, here is a solution that worked for me.
