Apparently, this doesn't appear to be exclusive to Lucid now that I am
back on Karmic and I am still having a similar problem. The difference
is that I see a black desktop and then a couple of minutes later, my
desktop appears with icons at the same time.

I found out what the problem was/is. Because this modem also has a
built in SD driver, ubuntu doesn't see it as a modem until I 'eject' it
first. So I have to type 'sudo eject /dev/scd1' first of all and after
that, I can use network-manager to connect.
