When I start Pidgin, it plays sound alerts as expected. However, after a while,

I tried installing and then uninstalling the proprietary ATI driver with
restricted-manager (compiz doesn't work with those drivers, only with
the free ones), but this bug still manifests itself. We're not expecting
users to edit their xorg.conf for that, are we?
