can't use autodetection feature and "change resolution" applet.

As far as I can remember I solved this problem by removing all
"dot"-directories (not all but everything about kde) from my home
directory.
I repeated the steps to reproduce the problem on my current system
(Edgy) and did not get trash now.
The problem is solved, I think.

For me Ctrl-Alt-F1 and then Ctrl-Alt-F7 enables the screen but shows a message

downloading of the updates during installation.
Previous installation on the same machine under the same conditions except
installation of 3rd parity packages that was not marked - worked fine.
