Ok I went into the server and it ended up as being ReiserFS corruption.
Repaired with:

On my first report I was using latest Lucid Lynx Alpha available at
2010-04-17.
That was the default kernel (2.6.32) and was detected as "AlpsPS/2 ALPS
GlidePoint", at this point neither horizontal or vertical scroll worked.
Then in 2010-05-19 I updated to Kernel 2.6.34 from PPA Kernel Mainline,
Where did you found such fixes?, I think Maxim has not done them as yet!

BTW, make & make install did succed, but after rebooting it still does

umm I did two things to finally make it works.
1. I burned the Alternate CD again at low speed (16X).
2. Meanwhile, I re-installed Adept (I was not using it, but kind of
feeling about it may be the cause).

About the MD5 sum: I check it on the downloaded ISO, but not on the
burned CD, I'll do the MD5Sum on the first disk (the one which I thing
is damaged) to see if that was the issue or was the missing Adept.
