This is because the panel icon is a personal setting. If you upgrade
from one version of Xubuntu to another, personal settings are not
overwritten (it would be quite annoying to have all your settings
overwritten to defaults, wouldn't it? :). On a clean install, the icon
is correct.

Thanks Dafydd, your method solved the problem for me. For some reason
though, I have to eject the floppy disk that contains GRUB for my normal
installation when I want to boot from my USB flash drive. This never was
an issue before.
Let's get this fix in as soon as possible :)

different application than xfce4-mixer. The problem might just be that
xfce4-mixer can not be reached from the menu (though I believe it can be
opened using the Mixer panel plugin).

I believe my problem was self inflicted.
I am new to Ubuntu and am learning to build the kernel.
After I built, installed and ran a new kernel I deleted the kernel and moved
the source.
Apparently I did not remove the kernel cleanly, but left a hook somewhere
pointing to the removed kernel. Runn
Could it be that you closed the application you copied the text from
before you pasted it? If so, could you check whether you have the
ClipMan plugin in your panel? (You need that to save clipboard contents
after you close an application, not sure whether it was in Xubuntu
9.04's default configurat

Yep, in principle fusion-icon can also switch to xfwm4. I suppose
Xubuntu users would want to use Emerald with Compiz though, at least
until a new decorator is available.
