This fixed it for me. I edited /etc/default/grub and added the notsc
option after GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=
I then ran update-grub and restarted. Since then, I have not gotten this
error.

Same here: Ubuntu 9.04 installed with Wubi and then upgraded to 9.10.
After upgrading I was neither able to reboot nor shutting down the
system.

Hi Christopher, from my current knowledge the bug still exists in
upstream kernels (this laptop unfortunately has a "Dolphin v2"
touchpad)... You added a "cherry-pick" tag, do you have a patch ready
that I could test ?

I also have the same problem when adding a epson px720wd networkprinter.
When i use controlpanel>add printer, the installation keeps hanging
arond 50%.
