Solved! Tried today with an up-to-date 915resolution and it works! It
detected the correct settings and, after editing
/etc/defaults/915resolution I can work with 1400x1050, 32 bpp now. .

Since the last HAL update I can't automount any USB devices; althought
the devices are detected by the kernel, no icon shows up on the desktop.

http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde-355/pool-dapper/hal

*What happens*:
In the Ksynaptics configuration screen, when I turn the touchpad off,
all the configuration options grey out and become inactive, as they
should. However, when I wnat to switch it back on, they stay greyed out.
