I can confirm this problem, within pilot-xfer the problems occurs in the
isatty function and is reported to the user-space as segmentation fault.
It happens with all 2.6.15-kernels for the 686 architecture and is
solved with the 2.6.17 kernel available in unstable release.

I also can confirm the bug to be present in update-manager 1:0.126.9 of
karmic. Neither the proxy setting in synaptic nor the environment
variable http_proxy are consulted when trying to the update.
The patch in use-urllib2-in-url_downloadable-3.diff fixed the problem
for me.

Similar problem occurred to me when trying to update from 16.04 to
18.04. I had to uninstall the postgresql-plperl-9.5 package first. Then
the update was startable.

I was able to start the upgrade with:

LANGUAGE seems to be the variable which determined the language of the

I noticed a similar problem with an amd64 install of oneiric. I
currently have several application windows opened and have problems with
the display of the window switcher.
If I invoke alt tab on a desktop with a window I can see that the
switcher window is displayed behind the application window
I get this error because downloads need to use a HTTP proxy. The system
is configured to use the proxy (i.e. http_proxy environment variable is
set) but this environment setting is not used when installing packages
through the update-manager.
If I manually run
sudo -i /usr/lib/update-notifier/pac
The same here, previous kernel 3.5.0-25-generic works without problems,
3.5.0-26.42 hanged just now:
$ dmesg|grep i915

@jsakusbury: I tested your kernel 3.5.0-27-generic #45~lp1140716v1 (from
comment #22), it was no improvement for my system. I got two hangups
within the first hour (one S3 cycle at 1985), the second one forced me
to turn off the system:

Kernel 3.9.0-030900rc3-generic from comment #21 is much more stable for
me, no problems so far after 4h of operation.

I can confirm the description of mikewse in comment #16.
If I get an update of flashplugin-installer via update-notifier, the
update fails because the proxy settings are not used. I then ran:
sudo dpkg --pur
