I don't do much interaction with local systems, so for me it's critical
that I can set the default (or at least a profile and tie that to a
bookmark) to match that of the remote systems I connect to. F

config-printer display. I extracted the last page of a PDF (18 page
document) to a file. Then I tried to print the single page with evince.

For me "cat /proc/acpi/battery/*/*" (as the user, not root) makes gnome-
power-manager figure things out (at least until the next time the ac is
plugged in)... Also since the karmic upgrade (when this problem
started), my only battery shows up as BAT1 under /proc/acpi/battery. I
used to be BAT0..

John, in most cases what you say is true. However, in this and a few
other cases the problem has not been quite so trivial - hence the bug-
reports after people have tried normal methods such as you suggest.
