Hmmm, seems annoying. I like to keep my desktop clear and sometimes
reboot Ubuntu 8.10 just to clear the clutter i manage to build-up
through using different folders over the network here.
As a temporary work-around could you Add To Panel a Drawer applet and
have those links/shortcuts in the Draw
Ooops, i got Drawer wrong - it stores applets rather than files and
shortcuts. In Windows i tend to dump everything from my destop into a
sub-folder in 'My Documents' and place a short-cut to that sub-folder on
my desktop. I dunno what the difference between hard-links and soft-
links is, perhaps

Only the items in the last box remained selected but i couldn't do
anything with them. The right-click menu worked but acted as tho the
mouse arrow was on an empty area of the desktop - i couldn't delete
anything. I could create new folders/documents and it
Ubuntu 8.10 with Nautilus 2.24.1, my cpu is an Amd and i trialled this
bug with and ati graphics card with proprietary driver enabled - not a
laptop. Both mices(?) mouses(?) errr, one mouse was a usb one and so
was the other mouse

Actually it's still not back to normal. I still can't do anything with
any of the icons on my desktop. The boxes are still there (but looking
pretty).
I can use the panel/taskbar applets and menu's tho and i'm able to
switch between the different desktops and between open applications.

I sometimes use rename on a folder with a similar name but do Ctrl C
(copy) rather than actually renaming it and then use Ctrl V (paste) in
the new folder and then tweak it.

Hopefully there's tons of junk in temp folders (be careful tho) or files
starting with a ~ sign that you might be allowed to delete (without
destroying the Windows boot, hopefully).
Personally i'd recommend forcing yourself to stay in Linux by losing the
Windows System files, just gradually increa
i think Pedro was just helping you collect relevant data so we could
look at why the bug happened and if it's reproducible on another machine
so we could fix it more easily. I don't think he was saying the wiki
would fix the problem, that happens later - i think.

Hmmm, someone suggested a workaround for part of this problem, maybe

I searched in the Synaptic Package manager for Nokia and found a number
of native linux apps that work for a whole range of different handsets
so that you wouldn't have to struggle with exporting/importing data as
you change handsets over the years.

slightly less reliable brand but was a lot cheaper when i bought it.
Its great mostly but occasionally has a bit of trouble.
I find that whichever drive has trouble reading something usually the
other one can cope with it. i

Err, it worked for me. Ubuntu 8.10 Totem 2.24.3 probably not the same
hardware. It hadn't occured to me to try navigating with the keyboard
as the mouse works fine. I wonder if the laptops mousepad works, they
usually have one and the YouTube movie carefully avoided using it.

Errr, that cleared up when i used 'Ctrl -' a few times.
I looked up the dpkg help by typing dpkg --help and still don't kow what it
did, lol, but at least its updating happily so i'm not worried. The last line
in the help file said

ummm, i didn't read all this but isn't it better to use the 'Organise
Bookmarks' Option when you have a long list of bookmarks.

I just made a fresh 8.04 install, and discovered this with a default
language of Japanese and a USA/Dvorak layout (only one keyboard layout).
Adding a USA/Default layout and moving it up and down and clicking on
the default buttons doesn't help. And the picture of the layout doesn't
show a backsla

and reopen are they the right size again now? Also the F11

A time factor addresses my concerns. Often it's just after making a

Yep, i think 'bumping it' to flag it up to a more experienced team
acting as 'a second-line of defence' would be ideal. Sorry to string
cliches and odd terms together its the fastest way for me to re-explain
