Same here, Ubuntu 20.04.
It worked previously, now it gives me the same message as above.
Not sure when this happened exactly, but it should be around the same time (end

It is a problem of conflicting packages I think.
I got it working by uninstalling network-manager-openvpn,
network-manager-openvpn-gnome, and openvpn-systemd-resolved. This also gets rid
of OpenVPN and Surfshark itself, so the two packages need to be reinstalled
afterwards.

Someone told me that the output from journalctl would be useful.
I reduced the ginormous output to the stuff from 19 Dec. When it starts (Dec 19
19:37:20), things were still broken. Non sure at what time I got it working,
but at some point I did the steps listed in my second post and it was work
For me shutting down the system, unplugging the power supply, waiting a
minute and then restarting solved the issue, at least by now.
I have Lucid Lynx 32 bit, kernel 2.6.32-26-generic, and the network adapter
stopped working with no apparent reason, after a month or so of normal use

Thanks Brian, I had no time to update this report. You hit the
problem... I had this doubt and tried in the nieght a new installation
using the dvd writer (5 years old) instead of dvd rom (8 years old!)...
at the morning I found that installation was succefully done!
