I have a similar problem in jaunty (though it appears to work in karmic
atm). I can restore the functionality of the volume keys by removing the
~/.pulse folder, but the problem reappears when I reboot (the same fix
will fix it though).

I did some more digging, and it turns out that this only occurs if a
desktop file does not have a Type specified for the Desktop Entry.
Adding Type=Application for compiz.desktop solved the problem for
/usr/sh

I have downloaded the 0.3.0 bzr branch and the files still do not play.
I don't get any error, the files in the directory with the brackets
simply do not show up in the library. When browsing to the directory

There is a key in gconf to control this behavior,
/apps/nautilus/preferences/always_use_location_entry. I unchecked it on
mine (buttons instead of text in put) and could change back to text
input with CTRL+L, but couldn't go back to the buttons with CTRL+L.
