In the last few days I upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10 to 9.04. This bug
definitely did not occur under 8.04.
During startup, when all the normal [ Starting GNOME Display Manager ]
type messages appear, they are interspersed with the repeated complaint:

Chris - I always assumed there was a hardware problem. The point of
this bug report was to suggest that Ubuntu deal sensibly with the
hardware problem by posting a single error message somewhere, rather
than getting stuck in an infinite loop of error-message posting.
