I have a similar problem with a VIA software Raid setup (using hardy).
I have attached the output of the different dmraid commands that are asked
before.

dmraid installer comp
I noticed that dmraid creates the /dev/mapper/via_bfdbdagceh.dm-tmp file and
renames it, but later it deletes it again. I don't know why.
If there is anything I can test, please let me know.

Vojta: Thank you very much for this comment. This also helps for my
situation (using a via SATA mirror RAID).

I have installed dmraid-1.0.0.rc14-2ubuntu12 (and
libdmraid1.0.0.rc14-2ubuntu12) on my system and after installing it has
created the /dev/mapper directory with the right devices for my raid
system.
So I think the issue is solved.

I have run blkid 3 times, first after booting the live CD, second after
`swapoff -a` en third after `apt-get install dmraid`
The first output (after booting the live CD):
/dev/sda1: UUID="D4DC7D78DC7D55A8" LABEL="XP_c_ntfs" TYPE="ntfs"
/dev/sda5: UUID="3A30D91E30D8E1C5" LABEL="XP_d_ntfs" TYPE="nt
It might be that my /dev/mapper/via_bfdbdagceh8 didn't have reiserfs
after all.

Problems with gcc-3
A work-a-round to get the package installation to complete, is to copy other
gcc info files to the file that is missing.
This can be done by doing the following steps:
[code]
cp /usr/share/info/gcc-4.1.info.gz /usr/share/info/gcc-3.4.info.gz
cp /usr/share/info/gccint-4.1.info.gz /usr/share/info/gc
