The problem seems to be that some of these programs use a perl
installation script, but it is failing to find Perl's Unicode::String

I think what's going on is that unmounting a drive doesn't remove the
mount point--the empty folder /media/disk will remain. You can delete
this as with a normal empty folder. Can you confirm that this is what's
going on?

I've marked as affecting flashplugin-nonfree, then realised that you
haven't actually said which one you do use. Can you check which flash
player you're using (the main ones are flashplugin-nonfree from Adobe,
gnash, and swfdec)?

If you create a new user account, start firefox on its own, and don't
install any add-ons, does the same thing still happen? Also, what pages
do you have open when you close it? Make sure to try closing without
using any flash or java content--e.g. set the homepage to Google, then
open the browser

seen it before, but I've looked it up, and apparently it means
"Thumbnail" and is functionally equivalent to JPEG. Could you try:
