i tried both. with and without started network-manager. But i think it
doesn't matter. modemmanager can run without networkmanager.

i tried again on i386 and an N900 modem and MM works correct.
Maybe something changed between old and new version because i used an RS232
modem on atmel_usart port and that worked correct with the old version but the
new MM version does not detect the modem.
