Fantastically, this updated kernel from Colin works perfectly. I removed
the /etc/pm/sleep.d/20_custom-ehci_hcd script, installed the kernels
downloaded from Colin, and rebooted, and suspend works perfectly either
by command from the device menu or by closing the lid.

The problem also occurs with empathy using google talk, *and* it occurs
with a separate USB mic (that is: the separate USB mic works fine in
Sound Recorder but is unhearably quiet when using skype, mumble, and
empathy); I suppose it's possible that skype, mumble, and empathy all do
the same
