1) Install the drm-intel-next kernel [1]. Download and install the _all
headers, amd64 headers, and amd64 image.
2) Add debugging information to dmesg.

Why yes, there is :)
But first, we need a little more background information: What exactly do
you mean by "crash"? Exactly what screens do you see? Also, can you
switch to a TTY with Ctrl+Alt+F1 when it crashes? If not, can you kill X
with Alt+SysRq+k?

Please try the 2.6.35-rc1 kernel [1]. See if you can capture anything in
'/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state' after a crash. If so, please
attach that file, along with the output of 'dmesg', /var/log/dmesg,
/var/log/dmesg.0 /var/log/kern.log, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old.

Could you please try the current mainline kernel [1] and see if this
fixes it? Download the *_all.deb headers file, the linux-headers for
amd64 and the linux-image for amd64. And then install them in that order
(just double-click them).

Excellent, thank you for the Xorg.0.log.old. Next time, do you mind
attaching logs as .txt? It makes them easier to open in a browser. (I've
re-uploaded it for you as a .txt.)
Also, do you mind attaching a dmesg from /var/log that has a timestamp
that coincides with the freeze? You can take a look

Good. Can you now please test the kernel stack here [1]? Install the
_all headers, the amd64 headers, and the amd64 image. Then remove
i915.powersave=0 and boot into the new kernel (hold down Shift while
booting and select it).

Please do play with turning off compiz and changing its settings as
described above.
Also, you might have more luck with the X-Updates PPA; it's more stable than

Do you have more than one dmesg in /var/log? I have dmesg and dmesg.0,
the latter of which is an old dmesg specifically for situations like
this. Old kern.log's and syslog's might also have interesting errors.
You could probably also SSH into your frozen computer, but I'm really no
expert at this.
