After installing the new proposed kernel (2.6.24-20.38) the system boots
successfully. (Yay!)
However now my graphics card is not recognized. After a lot of flickering X
finally starts but with only 800x600 resolution.
When booting 2.6.24-19 the graphics works fine.

again if X works better after disabling proprietary nvidia drivers.
My report for a successfully booting 2.6.24-20.38 is on an Athlon 1600+

I am getting the exact same message on an HP laptop I am trying to setup
with dualboot WinXP + lucid.
Fixed it by chrooting from the ubuntu cd to the ubuntu installation and running
grub-update; grub-install /dev/sda.
However the problem returned after booting windows once (and installing

For me this problem was fixed by uninstalling the HP recovery stuff from
windows as it was overwriting parts of grub2 at every opportunity.
I don't know if this is a good solution. But HP:s stuff assumed there was an

ofdebian-installer and bailed when I got to the partitioner. I would say it is
likely an xorg problem, but it is an xorg problem that blocks any usage of the

Have done some more testing and concluded that it actually boots all the
way to the desktop.
After boot is finished and the cd spinns down I can hit Alt-F2, type sudo
reboot, and the reboot is initated.
Tried with another monitor (TFT, previously only tried with CRT). Same results.

You need to edit /etc/sane.d/snapscan.conf to point to a firmware called
