got same problem with my elderly machine since installing with 4.15.0.20.
Actual kernel 4.15.0-30-generic. Thought, it could depend on old BIOS (AHCI)
with my pentium M. It appears with reboot - normal shutdown normally works.
Do
today xubuntu deployed kernel 4.0.13-17. Looking into grub editor at
starton, gfxpayload option isn't shown any more. Does kernel update edit
grub boot options? If yes, how is etc/default/grub updated? Otherwise
latter update-grub would restore options of historic version?

with ideapad S10-2 noplymouth start process runs until tty1-login. After
that only blueish pixels appear at the upper edge of the screen. With
nomodeset edit in grub the netbook can be used. About 5(?) years ago
intel 945 had similar trouble with kernel.

evince shows pdf correctly, even as print overview. HP710c prints blank
pages, but cups is in good function with Libre Office etc.

It's still very slow. When I don't attach a serial device like you gave
an example for to the virtualbox, it still has that 90s pause between
mentioned 'printk' lines during booting and booting is slow in general.
