I am hearing this problem on Gutsy (x86). Did not have a problem on
Feisty or Centos 5. I'm using Rhythmbox to play mp3 and flac files.

I should add that it appears to happen more with songs with more of
certain frequencies. Download chesapeake.mp3 from
www.portastatic.com/sounds.html for an example (the server is down right
now, or I would give a direct link).
I'll see if disabling dmix as mentioned above helps here.

Turns out that at least my problem has something to do with gstreamer
mp3 decoding that manifests especially with low bitrate mp3s. But even
higher bitrates pop/crackle every 1-2 seconds. Listening to the same MP3
with VLC causes no pops, Rhythmbox crackles. Tested with two soundcards

Trying to install Gutsy/AMD64 beta (latest, network install, also tried
CD). Using text-based install because I'm using LVM.

Solved by copying /lib/modules/* to /target/lib/modules under the
installer. The kernel & modules were not installed when initramfs-tools
was trying to build the initrd, so it failed.
Stilll don't know why kernel & modules were not installed in /target at
this point.

under 2.6.22-12, X recognizes my integrated intel graphics (G33), under
2.6.22-13 it is "recognized" as VESA. The update does fix the amount of
memory seen by the kernel from 2.7G to 4G, but at the price of working
graphics...

I have the same problem, my dmesg is similar to above. I opened bug
150099 for this - didn't see this one.
I tried the -server kernel also: same error. This also happens with 64
bit Gutsy with the -13 kernel, but I haven't tested an earlier kernel
there.
