I did install Ubuntu 11.10 back on the same HW without a problem and I am using it daily without any problems. The hardrive is IBM SDD drive. 12.04 also had hard time downloading the 11.10 image without crc errors and in the end I used other computer to do it. I can boot to 12.04 from USB stick

As I had just installed the 11.10 using the same USB stick with success, instead of getting another stick I just reloaded the most recent 12.04 installer image made a startup disk and what do you know: the problem(s) are gone now - not sure what has changed, but this bug can be closed. ** Changed
