At least, in Dapper and Edgy, with my ATI X300 PCIe, it's impossible to
obtain 3D acceleration.
If I execute glxinfo or glxgears (for example), console say:

First of all, my mainboard is Gigabyte GA-K8NF, and the graphic card
isn't integrated.
The combination of CTRL + ALT + F1 don't work, and none of the others.
I can't execute sudo dmesg.
