Go to smplayer settings and set all cache options to zero. This cured the issue
for me.

Some additional info, probably important. I have found exactly one video
file in my collection that smplayer can play without freezing. It is a
matroska format file (.mkv), while all others are avi. This single file
is played flawlessly. But when I convert it to avi using "mencoder -oac
copy -ovc c
I need to emphasize that I am using KDE 4.7.1. The issue does not depend
on the video card (I tested two intel ones and nvidia, all on different
computers). Video files of other formats that I tested (wmv, mpeg) cause
the same freezing as avi.

This bug seems fixed in ttf-symbol-replacement for wine-1.3 from the
wine ppa, but is still present with wine-1.2 from this same ppa. The
wine's Symbol font overrides the original system one for the 1.2 branch,
but this no longer happens for the 1.3 branch. It can be checked in e.g.
Okular's "File-
Oh, it seems this ttf-symbol-replacement-wine1.3 package does not
contain any font at all! There is only a single "changelog" file in
/usr/share/doc, according to Synaptic... Then it is clear why it looks
"fixed"...

Indeed, the issue is with the unicode encoding. In my case, e.g., the
degree sign (U+00B0) was rendered as uppercase Upsilon which is wrongly
mapped in the wine's Symbol font by the same code. And wine's unicode
code for the degree symbol is U+221e, which normally refers to the math
infinity sign.

After today update of the intel driver, I experience only X hang-ups instead of
crashes (again after the screensaver interrupt, if the "Suspend desktop effects
for fullscreen windows" is ticked on).
I now looked in XOrg.0.log and found the following lines there

Also, I checked the output of hcidump - it remains empty, no reaction to

Bluetooth headphones media
I found the root issue and a workaround. Pulseeffects package in Impish
is of the same version as in Hirsute 4.8.4-1, so it cannot be the direct
cause. But the issue is eliminated by downgrading the following four
packages from their Impish version 0.40.0-1 to the Hirsute version
0.38.0-2:
dconf-g
Changing this to d-conf because its downgrade helps to eliminate the
issue
