Hm, looks like I was approaching this from the wrong angle.
The DEBCHANGE_TZ variable has been introduced to specifically override
any environment variables. At least that is my understanding now. What
I want can be done like this (unless DEBCHANGE_TZ is set in
~/.devscripts)

I added some kind of tweak so that this would not bother me every single
login. Looks like this tweak does not work for Jaunty. At any rate,
this annoying and highly problematic bug is still present in Jaunty.

I hit this bug today myself after updating from hardy to jaunty. Gnome
terminal became rather sluggish with the jaunty version whenever the
window is maximized. This is most visible when switching tabs, but
input is also slower than I was used to from hardy.

This works in the latest hardy version now, yay.

BTW, this also happens in terminator for me.
Javier, thank you for reporting back. Those versions in experimental
are actually older than what it is in jaunty. The version number also
suggests that these packages did not come from Debian. It is still very
feasible that Debian discovered and app

My main system is fine (actually I think the display of fonts has
improved a bit, being even crisper now than they were in hardy). But
when I use xephyr to "Login to a new window", font sizes are off by a

this is affected by, but still a separate issue to Jaunty showing large
fonts because of dpi settings (comment 7 confirmed this problem exists
even with correctly detected dpi settings)
