I've been switching back and forth between the -generic and the -386
kernel. There was always something that worked on one but not the
other. It's been too long that I would remember an

FWIW, I don't use audacity that much and usually don't have music
playing in the background. I never experienced this previously. Today,
I tried to reproduce this with exaile and audacity in Jaunty. The music
from exaile stayed the same speed. That does NOT mean the problem does
not still exist
It may be that I installed the -386 kernel instead of the -generic one
because it is 25% smaller. But I have no clear recollection of it
anymore.

I'm not sure this is a bug. xorg.conf is not really needed anymore.
All this stuff should be auto-detected. Can you please try if running
without any kind of xorg.conf in place works for you?

alright, I fixed the compile failure, it was a rather straightforward
FTBFS because libcups2-dev was not declared as a compile-time
dependency.
Unfortunately, the recompiled package still produces the same error.
