I believe the pain is self-inflicted in Ubuntu. The responsible patch
is 104_use_exa.patch. I hope that upstream will help us out of this with
a proper patch that selects EXA by default but drops back to XAA in low-
memory situations.
Stay tuned.

this bug has been marked for expiration quite a while ago.
I grabbed the most recent jaunty kernel to see if the problem was likely
still there and it seems that is not the case. closing as fix released.
