The original poster forgot to add that gnome is losing your monitor
preferences as well. You can use the monitor switch mode on your laptop
but you cannot get it to bring up the desktop monitor. Or it will bring
it up as the secondary instead of showing the same image on both.

The quick fix works only if tried enough times. This morning I was
unable to hook my laptop up to my desk monitor at work. I had to restart
ubuntu with the lid closed and the desk monitor on.
