I am having this exact same error. Tried uninstalling, removing config
folders, removing password key, and reinstalling and rebooting.

In comment 145 I reported that the problem had mysterious gotten fixed
without me doing anything after a regular update. Now just as
mysteriously, it has stopped working again. Desired behaviour:
pulseaudio works on boot, jack works when loaded. Actual current
behavior: PA does not work, though
Thanks Marcello, I'm pretty familiar with that page! I have the onboard
soundcard disabled in bios, so switching is not a problem (yet...I still
have a presonus firepod to hook up). The fix in comment seven appears
to have worked for me too, with the appropriate sound card code
substituted.

I had this problem and kainbox's solution #18 at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1601810&page=2 worked for me.
downloaded slax live cd, which does not try to mount anything, then ran
e2fsck -y -f -v /dev/sda2 and got the system back next boot. NB: had to
copy files from the slax dir on sl
solved by fresh install of 10.10

Tried solution from # 53 instead of # 7 and sound fails on resume from
sleep. PA meters show the sound as going through, but no sound comes
out the speakers, and when I try to start jack, it fails to connect as
well. reboot fixes it until next sleep.going back to fix in #7 (edit
