sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm
Now choose lightdm
Use tab key and arrows and enter key.
sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm restart
Should bring you to login screen and all should work.
On upgrade you still have gdm installed which is what lightdm does in oneiric.

If any problems then install unity-greeter also
sudo apt-get install lightdm unity-greeter
then
sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm

11.10 beta2 as of Sept. 1st 2011 still have same problem with Ubiquity. Install
cancels at cannot unmount sda10.
Can go into chroot and update and upgrade, install grub to mbr and at reboot
install is complete.

Ubiquity fails at mounting- unmounting sda10

After choice of using settings from other installs fails to unmount sda10 that
is not mounted and fails to continue with install with a failure notice. sda10
just being another linux install.

apport used.

I downloaded 11.10 64 bit .iso standard Download, would not install with same
at "not unmounting at sda10" with a failure notice.
Then downloaded 11.10 64 bit .iso alternate Download and installed with out
error.
Have installed various versions of 11.04 Natty without incident.
